A US lumberjack who was trapped deep in an isolated forest freed himself by cutting off all the toes on his right foot with a penknife.

Jon Hutt (61) was pinned by a logging machine and said he was afraid it would take hours to find him and he might die.

Mr Hutt said he was trying to retrieve a pile of fallen aspen trees to cut up for winter firewood near Montrose in Colorado on August 19th when a logging trailer slipped and pinned his foot. His mobile phone was in his truck and unreachable.

Mr Hutt told his wife he would be back in several hours, but he did not know when she might start searching for him.

About 30 minutes after realising no one would hear his cries for help, he decided to use a 7.6cm knife to free himself.

"I cut off my boot to see my foot, and once I realised how bad it was, I started cutting off my toes," Mr Hutt said.

"It hurt so bad. I would cut for a while and then I had to rest."

Once free, Mr Hutt climbed into his truck, his foot wrapped in a shirt, and drove toward his home outside Montrose, about southwest of Denver. He called for help once he was in cell phone range. An ambulance met him on the way and took him to hospital.

His toes were too badly mangled to be re-attached.
