Leeds will know over the weekend the manager they want to replace David O'Leary.
Chairman Peter Ridsdale confirmed tonight the board were drawing up a short-list, believed to be contain six names.
Celtic boss Martin O'Neill appears to be the favourite to replace O'Leary, who was sacked yesterday.
Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy is also understood to be in the frame.
Ridsdale said this weekend would be key to the club deciding who would be the man asked to become the 20th manager in the history of Leeds.
"The board will be putting together a list of names today and I have arranged a meeting over the weekend, " he told the club's website, lufc.com.
"Once we have set out our target then I will start immediately to try and get him."
Celtic insisted there had no approach from Leeds about securing the services of O'Neill.
