A Northern Ireland lawyer is tonight being questioned about a suspected £500,000 legal aid fraud.

The man, thought to be in his 50s, once worked for a leading firm of Belfast solicitors.

Officers have asked a magistrate in the city for more time to interview him.

It is understood he was held after detectives went to his home near Belfast.

Police confirmed a man was arrested on Wednesday.

The alleged offences involved £500,000, according to sources.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "That person is helping police with their inquiries in connection with a legal aid claim fraud."
