The Fine Gael and Labour parliamentary parties are holding separate meetings today to discuss tactics ahead of the new Dáil session that begins in two weeks.

It is expected both parties will debate how best to capitalise on the Government's discomfort over the resignation of Ms Justice Laffoy from the child abuse inquiry.

With a difficult budgetary process already under way, they will attempt to shift the focus of debate to the increasing pressure on public finances.

Fine Gael will meet at the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney, Co Kerry; Labour will hold a two-day session at the Ferrycarrig Hotel, Wexford.

Last week, Labour leader Mr Pat Rabbitte said he had written to the leaders of Fine Gael and the Greens, proposing the three parties jointly table a motion of no confidence in the Government following the resignation of Ms Justice Laffoy.

Mr Rabbitte described the Government's behaviour as "reprehensible", saying it had acted with neglect and obstruction in relation to the commission.
