Planning permission has been granted for a €100 million mixed-use development in Kilkenny in what would be the largest of its type in the city.

Kilkenny Borough Council approved the scheme, which will see a new urban centre built on the site of the railway station. The scheme will include offices space, retail outlets, restaurants, housing, a hotel, and leisure and cultural facilities - including a new GAA museum.

The five-hectare site will also have over 1,000 car-parking spaces and designated open spaces for open-air cultural performances. Redeveloping the site is part of the council's plan to rejuvenate Kilkenny city.

The developers, Chesterbridge Developments, say the construction phase will provide employment for 500 people, and that when complete it should offer 500 sustainable jobs.
