Bass guitarist and composer Ronan Guilfoyle (left) leads an ensemble to explore the musical diversity of the Balkans - an area which, notwithstanding the work of Skopje-born trumpeter Dusko Goykovich, jazz has only begun to explore comparatively recently. The rich cultural mix of the region, which influenced composer Bela Bartok, includes Turkish gypsy music and Bulgarian dance, and arrangements of Bartok's Mikrokosmos suite will be performed by the group, along with Guilfoyle's own four-part Phantom City. Guesting will be the American saxophonist Mike McMullen, well known here, and the virtuoso accordionist Dermot Dunne. They play in The Pendulum@J J Smyths tomorrow.
