Dubliner jailed over guns and ammunition
A DUBLIN man was jailed for seven-and-a-half years by the Special Criminal Court yesterday for having five revolvers and 64 rounds of ammunition at an apartments complex in the south Dublin area last January.
Dean Byrne (22), Coolevin, Ballybrack, Co Dublin, pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of five ME .38 Compact G revolvers and 64 rounds of ammunition at The Ramparts, Loughlinstown, Co Dublin, on January 4th last.
During interviews Byrne said he owed a favour to someone who had helped him clear a €20,000 debt, and he was collecting the bag as a favour to that individual.
Det Supt Diarmuid O’Sullivan said Byrne was unlawfully at large at the time of his arrest. Mr Justice Paul Butler sentenced Byrne to seven-and-a-half years in jail, backdated to January.
Abuse witness denies dispute
A Dublin woman who claims her father sexually abused her from the age of four has denied the allegations arose out of a dispute over the family home.
The 38-year-old woman told the trial at the Central Criminal Court that her father sexually abused her and threatened to kill her if she told anyone. The 62-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to 19 counts of rape and oral rape in the family home and car in north Co Dublin between 1973 and 1978.
The trial continues today with closing speeches before Mr Justice John Edwards and a jury of five men and seven women.
Crash victim seeks damages
A young man who had to have his leg amputated due to injuries after a car in which he was a passenger struck a wall has brought a High Court action for damages.
Brendan Hayes (21), Mullally Lawns, Cappamore, Co Limerick, has brought an action against Sam Houlihan, Aherlow Heights, Tipperary town, over the incident on the Cappamore to Doon road on September 9th, 2004.
It is alleged Mr Houlihan was negligent and breached his duty of care to Mr Hayes due to the nature of his driving. The case is in court for assessment of damages only. The court heard the defendant accepted liability for some, but not all, of Mr Hayes’s injuries. The case before Mr Justice Michael Hanna continues today.
Fingerprints found in BB
Fingerprints of two men accused of INLA membership were found in a BB room in Cork, the Special Criminal Court heard yesterday.
Neil Myles (54), no fixed abode, Edward McGarrigle (43), Melmont Gardens, Strabane, Co Tyrone, and John McCrossan (47), Ballycoleman Estate, Strabane, Co Tyrone have all pleaded not guilty to INLA membership on February 22nd last year.
It is the prosecution’s case that the men were involved in a plot to commit a crime at the house of a man and his family in Cork city. The trial resumes next Tuesday.
Died after stab wound to chest
A man found in a pool of blood after being stabbed in the chest died afterwards, an inquest heard yesterday.
Eddie Gallagher (27), Ardcullen Estate, Holyhill, Cork, suffered a single stab wound to the chest on Friar’s Walk on the south side of the city on February 15th last.
The inquest was opened and adjourned yesterday pending the outcome of legal proceedings. A man has been charged regarding the death.
