Kayaker rescued after getting into difficulties off Kerry strand

A sea kayaker was rescued yesterday after he capsized and got into difficulties a mile off Banna Strand in Co Kerry.

Banna Sea Rescue were called out at 2pm after a member of the public phoned 999. A team of 15 volunteers launched the rescue vessel seven minutes after the call.

Under the helm of Thomas Fitzgerald, the boat picked up the man, who had lost his paddle after capsizing one mile west of the main beach. His kayak was towed to shore.

Seán Horgan of Banna Sea Rescue said the unit wished to thank the person who called and encouraged anyone seeing someone in difficulty at sea and on inland waterways to dial 112 or 999 and ask for marine rescue.

Leitrim honours  its leading artists

Well-known broadcaster, poet and dramatist Vincent Woods will be among those honoured at the first Leitrim Arts and Culture Awards this evening, writes RONAN McGREEVY

Woods, a native of the county, presents the Arts Tonight programme on RTÉ Radio 1. He is best known for his play At the Black Pig’s Dyke.

Other recipients tonight will include the film-maker Johnny Gogan; the dancing teacher Edwina Guckian, who got to the final of the RTÉ All Ireland Talent Show with her troupe Sean Nós ar an tSionnan; and Fr Patsy Young, who is being honoured for his contribution to amateur drama.

The awards, which have been initiated by Leitrim County Council, reflect the burgeoning arts scene in the county.

The event takes place at the Bush Hotel Carrick-on- Shannon this evening and admission is free.

Artisans to share thoughts on food

Artisan food producers in west Cork will play a central role in a new summer school course to run at UCC.

The course will provide students with an opportunity to learn from some of the country’s most famous food producers.

Based in Bantry, Schull and Baltimore, students will learn from producers of smoked fish and farmhouse cheese, and become familiar with the process of charcuterie, for curing meats.
