Two die in weekendroad crashes

Gardaí at Gurranebraher, Co Cork, are seeking witnesses to a fatal road collision early yesterday. Kathleen Barrett (25), of Moyross, Limerick, was pronounced dead at Lisavourna, Rathduff, and a man was taken to Cork University Hospital.

Gardaí from Kilmessan, Co Meath, are investigating a single vehicle crash at Derry- patrick Grange, Dunsany, early yesterday. Three young men were in the car and one was on life support at Navan Hospital last night.

In Buncrana, Co Donegal, gardaí have named the man killed in a collision at Quigley's Point, Donegal, on Saturday as Seán Duddy, Waterside, Derry.

Freighter held in Lancashire

The International Transport Federation said last night that a freighter which operates the Belfast- Heysham route would not be allowed to leave port in Lancashire until arrears of more than €150,000 due to the crew were paid.

The Merchant Brilliant crew had earlier refused to sail the vessel from Belfast. Norfolk Lines, which charters the roll-on roll-off freighter from a Russian company, said it would discuss the claims once the ship returned to Heysham.

In December the Merchant Brilliant was seized in Dublin in a row over crew arrears.

Ombudsman for elderly welcomed

Barbara FitzGerald, president of the Irish Association of Directors of Nursing and Midwifery, has welcomed the decision by Minister for Health Mary Harney to appoint an ombudsman for older people.
