THE Chairman of the RTE Authority, Prof Farrel Corcoran, has rejected the idea of a super broadcasting authority of the type proposed in legislation before the Cabinet, writes Michael Foley, Media Correspondent.
Dr Corcoran told a meeting of the Irish branch of the Royal Television Society that he had major reservations about the proposal, contained in a Cabinet memorandum seen by The Irish Times.
While he welcomed the idea of a body outside RTE which could draw up a charter and ensure the national broadcaster kept to its provisions, it should not be allowed to interfere with those functions within RTE that properly belong to manage meat. RTE could be caught in a "double bind" with the new super authority making demands on the one hand, while possibly taking actions that could diminish earning potential.
