An alert at the Israeli embassy in Dublin has come to an end after a suspect package delivered to the building was declared a hoax.

An envelope containing a powdery substance arrived at the premises on Pembroke Road in Ballsbridge in the post at around 8.30am today.

The Army Bomb Disposal Unit and Dublin Fire Brigade were called to the scene of incident. The embassy building was evacuated and Pembroke Road was closed for a period.

"An army bomb disposal team examined an envelope delivered to the Israeli embassy this morning, arriving on scene at 9.40am," an army spokesman said.

"The team carried out field tests on a powder substance from the envelope, outside the embassy building. These tests proved inconclusive. Therefore, the bomb disposal officer declared a hoax and the all clear at 10.30am."

The remaining contents of the envelope were handed over to gardaí, and an investigation is to be opened into the incident.
