Motorists were warned of attempts to hijack vehicles in the town after a Royal Mail van was set alight after being seized by masked men.

Police described the episode, which happen in the Shantallow area at around 12.30pm, as localised and said no-one was injured.

“Reports are coming in of other attempted hijackings in the city - motorists are advised to be vigilant,” a police spokesman said.

As many as 15,000 took part in the march which involved 140 bands.

Tight security was in place for the event as dissident republicans staged protests close by.
