Athletics:Ireland's Pat Hickey was unanimously re-elected President of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) at the General Assembly in Lisbon today.
Hickey will serve another four year term until 2013. In that time he will oversee the continent's challenge for Olympic success at the London Olympics 2012 plus the finalisation of the arrangements to acknowledge the role of sport in the new European Union constitution.
Hickey, President of the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI), is the sole Irish member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and is the highest ranked Irish administrator in the world of international sport.
“Pat is a superb leader, one who continues to help us manage and resolve the many issues that sport faces in Europe and beyond,” said Dr. Jacques Rogge, IOC President, on Hickey’s re-election.
In December Hickey will also receive France's highest decoration, the prestigious Legion d'Honneur from French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris in recognition of his contribution to Olympic sport in Europe.
