Get off your seat regularly

Sitting for long periods can cause your health to suffer

If you sit in an office for much of the day, or in a car or on the sofa or, well, if you sit for long periods anywhere, your health may be slowly suffering. Even if you get out for a walk or run at lunchtime or cram in a gym session before or after work, the lengthy sitting could still pose a problem.

So why not do your body a favour and take a break from resting on your backside? Research suggests that walking for just over a minute and a half every 30 minutes could improve how the body manages blood sugars.

Of course it’s easy to get absorbed in sedentary tasks, so set yourself ‘get-up’ cues - perhaps a gentle alarm on your computer or phone. Or if you are watching a TV programme with ad breaks, then use those breaks as a cue to get off the seat and move around. You’ll soon break the prolonged sitting habit.
