A SUCCESSFUL telephone befriending service for older people who live alone or feel lonely or isolated has been extended in Co Mayo.

Four new Befriending Mayo services have been launched for Ballina, Westport, Crossmolina and Knockmore with the goal of establishing a county-wide network of befriending services for older people.

Two Befriending Mayo services have been successfully operating in Castlebar and Claremorris over the past year, with approximately 20 volunteers and 50 service users availing of it.

The services, which are run by the HSE West and local voluntary social services, are confidential and free of charge. They involve trained volunteers making phone calls to older people who would like a befriending call on a regular basis.

Acting local health manager in Mayo Martin Greaney points out that Mayo has a high population of older people (14 per cent), many of whom are living happy and fulfilled lives. However, many are lonely, socially isolated and lack human contact.

Mr Greaney said: “Many of us are aware of somebody in our community who would benefit from this service. We would ask you to consider letting the person know about this service and, with their consent, give their details to the people involved in their local service. We are happy to work with any community group in Co Mayo who would like to develop a similar service in their area.”

Mary Staunton (87) looks forward all week to her phone calls from the Castlebar befriending service. A widow for 14 years, she lives alone in a quiet area eight miles from Castlebar town.

“My son John calls every morning on his way to work, but I might not see anybody again until the postman comes the next morning.

“The weather has been so bad and no bus comes this far. I would be lost without those phone calls.

“I can never be grateful enough to the people who take the time to listen to the likes of me and brighten up my day. They are my best friends now.”
