Dr Richard Neale, a gynaecologist who worked in Britain for 15 years despite having been banned in Canada, has been struck off the medical register, the General Medical Council (GMC) has announced.

The GMC said Dr Neale had been found guilty of serious professional misconduct, including medical errors, failure to accept responsibility and dishonesty. "Given the serious and persistent nature of the findings against you, it is necessary for the protection of the public that your registration be suspended with immediate effect," the GMC told him in a letter.

Dozens of women who say they suffer long-term effects from Dr Neale's treatment welcomed the outcome and were considering whether to sue him.

The 54-year-old doctor worked in hospitals in England despite having been struck off the medical register in Canada. The GMC was aware of his record but did not prevent him from working in Britain.

Dr Neale will not be allowed to practise in Britain for at least five years under regulations introduced this month. The GMC president said he had written to the Health Secretary to seek more power to pursue information about disciplinary findings in other countries.
