NEW DELHI - The new Indian Prime Minister, Mr Inder Kumar Gujral, won a vote of confidence in parliament yesterday, a day after his centre-left government took office. The speaker of the lower house, RA Sangma, announced that Gujral, the fourth prime minister in a year, had won the voice vote at the end of more than 10 hours of debate broadcast on national television.
Gujral's victory had been expected. He had the support of both his 15-party United Front coalition, with 178 votes in the 542-member lower house, and the Congress party with 140.
