The Minister for Education and Science, Dr Woods, yesterday announced guidelines to assist teachers in tackling literacy problems in primary schools. The "Learning-Support Guidelines" are designed to provide practical guidance for teachers and parents on the provision of support for children with learning difficulties and to strengthen the links between class teachers and learning-support teachers.

The Department estimates that between 6.5 and 9.5 per cent of 11-year-old pupils have serious literacy difficulties.
