Joan Gaspart has resigned as president of Barcelona football club.

Gaspart said last week he would resign on March 1st but the club's dismal league form has forced him to step aside three weeks early.

He said his departure was for the sake of the club and denied leaving because of poor health.

Enric Reyna succeeds Gaspart as president.

Barcelona are experiencing one of the worst seasons in their history, having slumped to 15th place in the Primera Liga, only two points away from the relegation zone.

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal left the club at the end of January. He has been replaced by Yugoslav Radomir Antic.
