Demonstrators tried to block workers from entering Shell's Bellenaboy gas terminal construction site in Co Mayo again this morning.

Extra gardaí were called in to move protesters from the road leading to the site, where they held a sit-down protest, blocking a convoy of vehicles from passing.

Some of the protesters accompanied the convoy on its route towards the terminal.

One of the protesters told ireland.comthat there was no confrontation on a large scale, and that the protest was largely peaceful.

He said that the demonstrators had staged a short sit-down protest, lasting about 15 minutes, after which gardaí moved people back from the road and allowed the convoy to pass.

A Garda spokeswoman said that gardaí had ensured the free passage of traffic on the road but that the protesters were entitled to continue their demonstration peacefully.
