A taxi was hijacked in Dublin city centre this afternoon, a Garda spokesman said.

A maroon Corina taxi was involved in a collision with another car at Heytsbury St in Dublin city centre. The passenger and a child in the second car were taken to hospital.

Gardai pursued the suspect, a 39 year-old male, through the city as far as Blackrock. He is now being detained in Irishtown.

It is believed that a black Fiat Punto, later found abandoned at Christchurch, was the hijacker's original vehicle.
