Detectives investigating an attack which left a young Chinese man fighting for his life have urged members of Dublin's Chinese community who may have witnessed the assault to come forward.

The victim, in his 20s, sustained severe head injuries during the fracas and remains on a life support machine at Beaumont hospital.

He is thought to have become involved in a fight after leaving a party in the south of the city between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. yesterday.

The man, who has yet to be identified, somehow made his way to Captain's Road in Crumlin and collapsed in the doorway of a house there.

Before passing out he mumbled words in broken English which suggested he had travelled from Dún Laoghaire by taxi.

With the victim yet to regain consciousness, gardaí have concentrated their inquiries on Chinese nationals living in the vicinity of the seaside suburb.

Yesterday officers visited English language schools and Chinese restaurants around Dún Laoghaire. However their inquires have drawn a blank.

The officer leading the investigation, Supt John Manley, said the case will prove difficult to solve unless the victim regains consciousness.

He called on anyone who witnessed the attack to contact Crumlin Garda station, where an incident room has been set up.

The assault follows a spate of attacks on Chinese nationals in Dublin. In July, one man was killed and two were seriously injured in a pitched battle between rival factions on O'Connell Street.

In January, a young Chinese student was killed in what gardaí described as a racially motivated attack.
