Garda driver on `999' call killed

A young Dublin garda was killed when the patrol car which he was driving was involved in a collision with another car at Greenhills Road, Mount Merrion, Dublin. He was Garda Eoin Fitzgerald (25), son of Assistant Garda Commissioner Peter Fitzgerald.

The accident happened shortly before 11 a.m. when he was on his way to deal with a "999" call. Garda Fitzgerald was driving the car, but the second garda in the car escaped serious injury. The woman driver of the other car received multiple injuries and was taken to St Vincent's Hospital.

Garda Fitzgerald was one of six people killed in road accidents since mid-afternoon on Sunday. Three were pedestrians.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to an accident at the Coolock end of the Malahide Road in Dublin, where a pedestrian, Mr Matthew Darcy (39), of Main Street, Kenmare, Co Kerry, was killed. The accident took place at about 10.30 on Sunday evening.

Two other pedestrians were killed in separate accidents on Sunday evening. At about 6.30 Ms Mary Nolan, of Clifden, Clara, Co Kilkenny, was walking near Clara when she was hit by a car and killed. Just under two hours later Mr John Guiry, of Killongford, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, was walking near Dungarvan when he was killed.

At 9 p.m. on Sunday night a motorcyclist, Mr Ron Tidey (33), of Drumlea, Co Cavan, was killed when his motorbike hit a telegraph pole at Butlersbridge, Co Cavan and went out of control. Gardai have still not identified a man who was fatally injured in a traffic accident on the Cork-Dublin Road at about 5.30 on Sunday evening.
