Det Chief Supt John O'Brien, (above) who is attached to Garda Headquarters, has become the first member of the force to receive a master's degree in Public Order Studies at the Scarman Centre in the University of Leicester.

Set up in 1996, the Scarman Centre was named after Lord Scarman, the English Law Lord whose report on the riots in Brixton and Toxteth set new guidelines for community and public order policing.

Chief Supt O'Brien was conferred with a degree with distinction.
