Mourners at the funeral of the Belfast taxi-driver shot dead on Friday night were told that those who killed him had "blood on their hands" and that nothing could justify their actions.

Mr Mark McNeill (32), a father of five, was shot several times by two gunmen who approached him as he got out of his taxi at a depot on Shaw's Road in the west of the city.

It is thought to have been a "grudge killing" linked to the INLA. Mr McNeill's family admitted he was a former member of the INLA and is blaming that organisation for his death. This was subsequently denied in a statement issued through the IRSP.

During the funeral at St Michael's Church in Finaghy Road North, Father Hilary Armstrong said: "No excusing words spoken by the perpetrators of his death can even in the slightest way justify their action. They have the blood of Mark McNeill on their hands."

A small cortege followed Mr McNeill's hearse the short distance from his parents' house to the church. A floral wreath spelling the word "Daddy" was placed beside the coffin. The former MP for West Belfast, Dr Joe Hendron, was among the mourners.

Father Armstrong told the congregation: "An integral part of our prayer today is motivated by the fact that Mark's death was not caused by an accident or by an illness. Mark's death was caused by the crime and grave sin of murder - those who ordered, planned and carried out his shooting."

He said the mourners should pray that Mr McNeill's killers would repent and seek the forgiveness of God.
