The French Foreign Ministry said today the first results of an investigation into the explosion on a French supertanker off Yemen seemed to show it was due to an attack.
The ministry statement came after a French inspector in Yemen said debris of what could be an attacking boat had been found on the French-flagged tanker Limburg.
"The first results of the inquiry by French, Yemeni and American inspectors lead us to think that the explosion on the French tanker Limburg on October 6th was due to an attack," it said.
"The continuation of the inquiry will allow a verification of these first results and determine the exact causes of this explosion," it said.
The ministry called on all French diplomatic and consular posts in the region to reinforce their security measures to protect French citizens. It said the French navy was also looking into how it could better protect French ships in the region.
