Colorado police have arrested four men suspected of being part of a gang of seven Texas prison escapees charged with killing a policeman, a Texas Department of Corrections official said.

Police were negotiating with a fifth fugitive to give himself up.

"Now we have four in custody and one remaining. The last remaining one - he's giving himself up when he's able to speak with his dad," a spokesman, Mr Mac Stringfellow.

Mr Stringfellow said the fifth man was believed to be holed up in a mobile home in Woodland Park, Colorado, about 50 miles (80 km) south of Denver.

Mr Stringfellow said officials got a tip early this morning about the fugitives.

Numerous sightings of the seven, who are believed to be armed and dangerous, have been reported in western states and in Texas since they broke out of a south Texas prison on December 13th.

On December 24th they allegedly robbed a Dallas-area sporting goods store and gunned down a police officer.
