ROAD CRASHES claimed the lives of four men over the weekend, one in an apparent hit-and-run that gardaí in Co Donegal are investigating.

The fatalities bring to 130 the number of people killed on the roads so far this year, compared to 135 in the same period last year,

A 40-year-old man died in a collision at Aughrim, Co Wicklow, at 3.40am yesterday when the car he was driving struck a wall. Fergal Curran, of Annacurra, Tinahely, Co Wicklow, was the sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Saturday two men died in Kerry and Donegal. A 22-year-old was killed when the car he was driving crashed on the N72 at Rathmore, Co Kerry, between 10.30pm and 10.50pm. Dan Murphy, Knocknaloman, Rathmore, was alone in the car.

Earlier on Saturday a man was found dead on a carriageway of the N15 at Parkhill, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal. The remains were discovered at 12.40am about a mile from Ballyshannon. The man has been named as 47-year-old Eunan McDevitt, Saimer Drive, Ballyshannon. Gardaí believe he had been hit by a car. On Friday morning a 24-year-old man suffered injuries in a collision in Co Meath and died later in hospital. He was a passenger in a car that was involved in a single vehicle crash at 4.45am at Cooksland, about 1km from Dunshaughlin.
