British boy band a1 have cancelled their Far East tour after four girls were crushed to death trying to catch a glimpse of the stars.

Two other girls were in a critical condition in hospital in the Indonesian capital Jakarta following the shopping mall crush when 1,500 fans stampeded.

Singers Mark Read, Ben Adams, Christian Ingebrigtsen and Paul Marazzi - who won Best Newcomers at the Brits recently - were described as devastated.

The band were performing at a record store in the Taman Anggrek mall but left after they became concerned about security.

Mall security guards said problems arose after about 1,500 fans panicked and tried to get out of the building to avoid being crushed.

The band only found out about the tragedy five hours later, an a1 spokesman said.

Jakarta police have launched an investigation into the deaths.

There were chaotic scenes earlier in the tour when the band appeared at shopping malls in the Philippines.

They were forced to pull out of one record store appearance in Manila when more than 20,000 fans showed up. Barriers were toppled and a shop window was broken as the crowd surged forward but there were no injuries.

The event was cancelled for safety reasons. PA
