A Fianna Fail councillor, Mr Roddy McGuinn, was yesterday elected chairman of Sligo County Council. He defeated Fine Gael's Ms Margaret Gormley, the only other candidate, by 19 votes to five. Cllr Paul Conmy (FG) was elected vice-chairman, defeating Labour's Mr Declan Bree, also by 19 votes to five.
