Extra resources urged on crime

A meeting of NUJ chapel (branch) officers at The Irish Times yesterday passed the following resolution:

"The murder of Veronica Guerin was more than just a brutal and horrifying act of terror. It was also a clear attempt to intimidate other journalists from doing their job. This must not happen.

"The Irish Times chapel calls on media managers to respond by allocating extra resources to investigating and exposing violent crime.

"This would be a tribute to the work of Veronica Guerin and send a clear message to the criminals that journalists will not be intimidated by them."

The union branch extended its sympathy to Ms Guerin's husband, Mr Graham Turley, their son, Cathal, and relatives and friends.
