Everton goalkeeper keeper Richard Wright has been given the go-ahead to resume training after a year of constant injury problems.

He has just returned from the USA after an exploratory operation on a knee problem. This followed treatment for previous knee and shoulder complaints.

Now Wright aims to win back his first-team place from Nigel Martyn and force his way into the reckoning for England's Euro 2004 squad.

He said: "It has been a frustrating year for me. I can't wait to see the back of 2003.

"My aim is first to get back into the Everton first team, and I know that will be hard because Nigel is playing so well.

"But I need to get back into the side to be playing the high standard needed to impress the England manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson."
