Motorists advised to take care after overnight rain

AA Roadwatch has advised motorists to drive with particular care today after heavy overnight rainfall caused flooding in some parts of the country.

Met Éireann has said heavy rain will continue to affect parts of Ulster and north Leinster for a time this morning. Later a band of showers will develop along the west coast and will spread eastwards during the afternoon.

Any showers will largely die out by early tonight to give generally dry conditions.

The gardaí have said, “this ‘Fatal Friday’ is national slow down day” and drivers have been advised to take care over the bank holiday weekend.

In Limerick, Shanagolden main street is impassable due to flooding and drivers are advised to take an alternative route.

The Skibbereen- Bantry Road in Cork is also reported closed due to flooding.

Kerry has been hit by flooding with motorists advised to avoid the N72 Killarney-Mallow road at Rathmore.

Drivers are also advised to take care on the N51 Drogheda-Slane road in Louth and in Kilkenny City where excess surface water is causing difficulty.
