New Zealand opener Mark Richardson, who missed a first century at Lord's by seven runs in the first innings, scored 101 in the second on the fourth day of the first test.

Richardson was again the anchorman as the Kiwis scored 336 all out to leave England a victory target of 282. At the close, the home side were eight for no wicket.

New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum fell only four runs short of his first test century when he was caught behind off fast bowler Simon Jones for 96.

Steve Harmison was again the most successful of the England bowlers with four for 76 from 29 overs, including a spell of three for 14 as New Zealand faltered after tea.
