Eircom said today it was scaling back the operations of its British subsidiary Eircom UK, resulting in the loss of around 80 jobs.

Eircom said the decision, which will reduce staffing at the subsidary's London-based unit to around 20 core personnel, was part of Eircom's intention to focus on its Irish market - including Northern Ireland.

The company signalled a strategy review of its UK interests late last year in the wake of its deal to sell its mobile unit Eircell to Britain's Vodafone.

The UK subsidiary, based in London's Canary Wharf, would now centre on servicing the communications requirements of corporate customers and managing its international traffic flows, it said.

In maintaining its UK presence Eircom retains the option of future development depending on improvements in the telecoms sector, Eircom said in a statement.
