MAYNOOTH'S Youth Resource Society has won the inaugural AIB National Society of the Year Award, organised by the Board of Irish College Societies.
One society from each of the State's seven universities competed for the title, including DCU's Dublin Business Enterprise Society, TCD's Jazz Society, UCG's Political Discussion Society, UL's Debating Union, UCD's Belfield Folk Group and UCC's Dramatic Society.
Maynooth's Youth Resource Society provides a dazzling array of activities for students, from sign language classes to dancing lessons, from wine tasting to driving lessons. It also raised over £2,500 for charity this year.
"They're very well organised and they cover everything," says Brian Gormley, student services officer with Maynooth students' union. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given Maynooth's success, he described the awards in general as a good idea. "I think it gives people a national focus," he says.
Meanwhile, UCC's Philosophy were awarded the laurels for best event of the year for organising the world debating championships, held in UCC at the end of last year. UL's Debating Union and TCD's Phil were also nominated. The awards will be presented in Dublin today by Bernard Allen, junior minister for sport.
