Born: 1964, Cavan

Education: Ballyconnell Church Of Ireland primary school; Bawnboy Vocational School; TCD (1981-1985) economics degree; TCD M.Litt 1988; PhD thesis to be submitted to Queen's University Belfast, department of sociology, May 2002.

Employment: ESRI research assistant; Fitzpatrick Associates, economics consultancy; Trocβire, research adviser, based in Ireland; Trocβire, Rwanda, 1994; lecturer development studies, the Centre for Development Studies.

Known for: chairman of Afri (Action From Ireland), a lobbying-for-justice group; campaigning against the dangers of militarisation. Opposed Ireland's involvement in European Rapid Reaction Force, NATO's Partnership for Peace; the Nice Treaty. Opposes the current US "war on terrorism".

Relaxes by: reading thrillers; favourite authors include James Lee Burke, George Pelloconos and Walter Mosely; occasional theatre-goer; plays soccer and squash.
