How long has the course been running?
It was set up as a diploma course in 1986 and becomes a master's programme from this September.
Why is it becoming a master's course?
"As a diploma course it was very successful - over 90 per cent of graduates found employment in the area," according to the course co-ordinator, Dr Niamh O'Sullivan. "We've decided to make it a master's programme because increasingly higher levels of professionalism are now required in the arts. We're aiming to keep up with developments and generate people who can work to a high standard."
How many people are admitted to the course?
25
Entry requirements:
A good honours degree and some experience in an arts organisation. People with relevant experience get far more out of the course, according to O'Sullivan, who says that only 10 per cent of students come directly from undergraduate courses. Some 70 per cent of applicants are interviewed. "We're looking for people with a good grasp of what's happening in the arts, a dynamic outlook and who would make good managers of people and venues."
Course content:
policy studies (including the social and economic context) public policy and administration, comparative studies in cultural policy and management and employment policy for the sector. Business studies including accountancy, management, business administration and marketing. Students also do a 10-weeks internship in a relevant organisation and a 10,000-word dissertation.
Course duration:
one year, full time.
Cost:
£2,870
