A DUBLIN man was jailed for life at the Central Criminal Court yesterday for the murder of a man in Finglas last year

A DUBLIN man was jailed for life at the Central Criminal Court yesterday for the murder of a man in Finglas last year. Mark Scally (21), of Glenties Drive, Finglas, was found guilty by an 11/1 majority of the murder of Michael Waters on September 26th, 1995.

The three day trial heard that Michael Waters (27), also of Glenties Drive, Finglas, died following a fight with Scally outside The Cardiff Inn pub in Finglas on September 26th 1995.

Mr Patrick Gageby SC, prosecuting, said the tragedy was that Mr Waters died over a trivial matter.

Some weeks earlier, Mr Waters had sold for £30 a bicycle which Scally had stolen from a woman. He kept £10 and gave Scally £20, which the defendant spent on heroin.

However, the woman went to Mr Waters and demanded he return the bike. He did so after returning the £30 paid to the purchaser. Mr Waters then sought the £20 from Scally and Scally paid him £10, saying he would give him the remaining £10 a week later.

On the night of September 26th, Mr Waters took from Scally a bag containing the defendant's T-shirt and jeans and said he would hold these until he received his £10. A fight subsequently broke out in which Mr Waters was fatally stabbed.
