Blood donations to the Blood Transfusion Service Board have gone up by around 100% following the board's emergency appeal last week, the BTSB medical director, Dr William Murphy, said in Cork yesterday.

Donations in some clinics were less than 500 a week but following the appeal the figure has risen to over 900, said Dr Murphy, adding that the appeal had brought a welcome stock of rare types such as rhesus negative into the system.
