Saudi Arabian dissident, Mr Mohammed Masari, appealed yesterday against Britain's decision to deport him to Dominica, arguing that the Caribbean island would not be a safe haven for him.

Mr Masari, leader of the London based Committee for the Defence of Legitimate Rights, was ordered out of Britain last month.

Human rights groups and opposition politicians accused the government of bowing to pressure from Saudi Arabia to protect lucrative trade deals.

At the hearing, lawyers for the dissident called into question the value of the assurances about his safety given by the government of Dominica.

The immigration appeal hearing, held in north London, was told that legislation in Dominica granted ministers broad powers to limit an asylum seeker's right to appeal if the government of Dominica decided to exclude him from the country.

But legal experts called by the British Home Office contested the claim, saying Mr Masari could reasonably expect a welcome in Dominica.

Mr Masari said that a well trained group of mercenaries "would have no problem" dealing with the security forces in Dominica.
