Damages paid for UVF killings

A Tyrone woman whose husband and youngest son were shot dead by the UVF has received damages of £51,000.

A Tyrone woman whose husband and youngest son were shot dead by the UVF has received damages of £51,000.

The claim by Mrs Brigid Shields (55), of Lisnageer, Carland, Dungannon, against the Northern Ireland Compensation Agency was settled at the County Court in Cookstown yesterday. Her daughter, Margaret (16), got approved damages of £20,000.

Mrs Shields's husband, Patrick (51), and their youngest son, Diarmuid (20), were fatally wounded in an attack on their home on the night of January 3rd, 1993. Another son, Davog (24), was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. A third son who was in the house at the time escaped injury.
