The Minister for the Environment Mr Cullen has called for a peaceful demonstration at the shipment of radioactive MOX fuel through the Irish Sea.

The minister made the call today aboard the Greenpeace ship, The Rainbow Warrior, which will lead a flotilla of boats in protest at the shipment which is travelling up the Irish sea to Sellafield.

"It is of the utmost importance that any demonstration against the BNFL MOX shipment is carried out in a peaceful manner," said Mr Cullen. "Any threat to the safety of this shipment, and more importantly to people and the environment, must be avoided."

The Minister promised the Government would continue to press for the closure of Sellafield, and to take every opportunity to underline its concerns about the unsustainability of the nuclear energy sector.

"The Government, the Irish people and non-Governmental organisations like Greenpeace share a common interest in the closure of Sellafield," said the minister. "We will continue to make our objection to Sellafield and the shipment of this dangerous fuel known."
