Solicitors host forum in media and defamation

Hayes solicitors is hosting a seminar on Society, Media, Defamation – A New Era? on Thursday at 2pm in the Corrigan Hall, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin.

The seminar will be chaired by Mr Justice Peter Kelly and speakers include Martin Cullen, Minister for Arts, Tourism and Sport; Irish Times editor Geraldine Kennedy; Prof Tom Mitchell, chairman of the Press Council; Irish Times journalist John O’Sullivan; Andrew O’Rorke, chairman of Hayes solicitors and David Phelan, a partner with Hayes solicitors.

Whistleblower protection meeting

Transparency International will hold a meeting on the theme An Alternative to Silence – Protecting Whistleblowers in Ireland, in Buswells Hotel, Kildare Street, Dublin tomorrow at 1 pm.

Speakers include Eugene McErlean, former internal auditor at AIB; Bernadette Sullivan, former nurse at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital; Tom Clonan, former Army officer and now Irish Times security analyst, and John Devitt, chief executive of TI Ireland. The panellists will focus particularly on such topics as the sexual and physical assault of children in the care or the State or the Catholic Church and the abuse of financial power by bank executives.

Transparency International Ireland will also publish a report on safeguards for whistleblowers in Ireland together with international best practice principles for whistleblower legislation.

Mediators ‘Thursday club’ set up

A club has been set up where accredited mediators can share ideas and information. The inaugural meeting was held last Thursday, organised by solicitor and mediator Colin Carroll. Called the Mediators First Thursday club, it will meet on the first Thursday of each month in the Shelbourne Hotel, where mediators can discuss the development of the market and their practices and promote mediation as “a cheaper alternative to litigation”.

Intellectual property lecture

The Irish Society for European Law is organising a lecture on intellectual property in the offices of Mason Hayes and Curran, South Bank House, Barrow Street, Dublin, tomorrow at 6.30pm. Speakers include Jenny Jones, associate with Bird Bird London, who will give an update on the English Patents County Court, and Jeanne Kelly, partner in Mason Hayes and Curran, who will speak on recent developments in Irish law.

King's Inns accreditation

Dublin Business School’s law degree has had its King’s Inns accreditation renewed. This degree was previously run by Portobello College, which merged with DBS. The accreditation means that graduates can sit the examination for entry to the King’s Inns BL course.
