The Democratic Republic of Congo today accused Rwanda and rebels itbacks of being behind the January assassination of President LaurentKabila, following an official inquiry into the killing.

Kabila was shot by one of his own bodyguards on January 16th andreplaced as president by his son Joseph.

"Rwanda and the RCD Goma worked together in the assassination ofthe head of state. Their special services and representatives werepresent in Kinshasa and certain neighbouring countries", AttorneyGeneral Luhonge Kibinda Ngoy told a news conference in the capitalKinshasa.

Rwanda supports the Goma-based Congolese Rally for Democracy (RCD)rebel faction in a war since 1998 that has pulled six African armiesinto a struggle for Africa's third biggest country.
