Jerusalem - conductor Daniel Barenboim said yesterday he was outraged by an attempt to prevent him from staging an opera by Adolf Hitler's favourite composer, Richard Wagner, at a festival in Jerusalem.

In a special session on Wednesday, Israel's parliament called for the Israel Festival organisers to cancel a July performance of Wagner's opera Die Walkure.

"You can say many things about Wagner but he is not responsible for the Holocaust," Barenboim said.
