A Cistercian monk, accused of raping a woman in Derry nine years ago, was released on bail in the High Court in Belfast yesterday. Father Gerard McCallion (48), Gloundyne Villa, Carraighrohane, Co Cork, is also facing three charges of indecently assaulting the 27-year-old woman while he was a priest in St Mary's parish in the Creggan.

A barrister told the court Father McCallion was strenuously denying the charges.

The judge told Father McCallion not to attempt to make contact with the woman.
