THE three main church leaders in Derry have issued an appeal for calm, moderation and "responsible citizenship" in Derry tomorrow.

The Rev Robert Davey, the Presbyterian Moderator for Derry and Strabane, the Catholic Bishop of Derry, Dr Seamus Hegarty, and the Church of Ireland Bishop, for James Mehaffey, said during the negotiations they had taken the opportunity to convey their concerns and hopes to both the Apprentice Boys and the Bogside Residents' Association.

They acknowledged the efforts by the representatives of both sides and shared the disappointment that a more satisfactory accommodation was not achieved.

Despite the complexities of the situation, progress had been made, they said. "However, we are aware that further efforts will be required, and we therefore encourage continuing dialogue," the statement said.

"While we are concerned for our own city and all its people, we are also concerned for the people of other towns and villages where parades will take place. Our hope is that good sense will prevail and that local sensitivities will be respected."

The church leaders pleaded with people to "reflect on the words of Christ who calls us all to `love the Lord our God' and `our neighbour as ourselves'." They invited everyone to join with them in prayer for peace.
