China has expressed sympathy for the "great loss of human life" in the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington

China has expressed sympathy for the "great loss of human life" in the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. The nation also expressed concern about the safety of Chinese working and studying in the US.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao, said: "We feel very sorry that on September 11th some areas in New York and Washington suffered attacks that caused great loss of human life.

"China always opposes and condemns all kinds of terrorism."

He added that President Jiang Zemin had sent a message to George W. Bush expressing condolences to the families of people killed in the attacks.

He commented: "Also, President Jiang expressed great concern about the safety of Chinese Embassy staff, Chinese students studying in America, Chinese-Americans and all Hong Kong and Macau compatriots in America."

According to China's trade ministry, at least one Chinese national was injured in the attack on the World Trade Centre.

The ministry said that person was an employee of the Beijing Municipal Economic and Trade Commission, whose office was in the Centre.
