Paris - The Secretary General of UNESCO, Mr Federico Mayor, yesterday urged the international community and the UN to undertake measures to alleviate the suffering of the Iraqi people.
"Now that the bombing is over, let us work together . . . to assist the people of Iraq, particularly their children," Mr Mayor said.
"Recent events have shown that unlimited resources can be mobilised for war," Mr Mayor added. "I can but hope that our efforts to assist the people of Iraq will not be limited to paltry gestures of charity."
